One of the most underrated places to stay near Faro is Olhão, a lovely fishing port only a 20-minute drive from Faro. There are plenty of things to do in Olhão, like wander the narrow alleyways in the old part of town and look for street art.
But the best thing to do is by far explore the barrier islands of Ria Formosa Natural Park by boat. Daily boat tours in Olhão take you to the beautiful natural scenery of islands like Armona Island and Culatra Island.
Besides sweeping beaches and enchanting fisherman villages, you can go snorkeling in waters that are home to the largest seahorse population in the world.

You can easily go to Silves to explore the best-preserved castle on the Algarve and go partying in Albufeira. Yet you are far enough from the hustle and bustle of the city.
I actually like Armação de Pêra because it is a little bit disconnected but at the same time close to everything and there is plenty of life there, especially in the summer.

Vilamoura is also home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, Praia da Falésia. With a magnificent red cliff towering behind it, it’s one of a kind and unique to the Algarve. Vilamoura is also home to some of the best beach resorts near Faro.

But the highlight might just be the rock salt mine that lies under the town. You can go on a guided tour to explore this exciting place and learn more about the rock salt mining industry as you wander through hundreds of million old formations.
You can also visit the Islamic Baths and step into Our Lady of Conception church. As you can tell, there is plenty to do, yet it is only a short drive to Vilamoura’s beaches. This is also one of the more budget-friendly locations to stay near Faro.
WHERE TO STAY IN LOULÉ:

With a rich Roman heritage, Estoi is a charming town that is easy to reach from Faro. It is located right north of the city and there are a few nice things to do in Estoi.
If you are looking for a slower pace than the coastal towns, especially in the summer, Estoi is the perfect place for you. Narrow cobblestoned streets wind through the enchanting old town to vibrant squares.
But the highlight is the Palácio de Estoi with its traditional white and blue tiles and sweeping views. Other attractions worth seeing are the 15th-century Igreja Matriz de Estoi and the Roman ruins of Milreu, the remains of a Roman Villa.
